Free Novice Taster Membership
If you’ve not rowed and/or coxed before and want to try it out, our free novice taster membership lasts from Week 1 to end of Week 4 of first term.
Novice Membership
After the free taster ends, if you decide to continue rowing then the Novice membership costs £30 for the rest of term 1. The cost for terms 2 and 3 is £35 per term.
Senior Membership
If you’ve rowed before coming to university, or you’re a current member of the Senior squad, then this is the membership you’ll need. The cost is £45 per term.
Coxes Membership
The membership for coxswains is £10 per term.
Land Training Membership
If you’d prefer to just participate in land training, or looking for a slightly cheaper way to still get involved, then this membership may be for you. The cost is £15 per term, and gives you access to our brand-new Concept 2 rowing machines and the weekly circuit training sessions held in the Lancaster University Sports Centre.
Recreational Membership
If you’ve rowed before but only want to go on the occasional water session and not participate in the land training, this membership is free but allows you to use our boats and blades for the cost of £5 per water session.
Sports Centre Gym Membership
To use our rowing machines and attend the weekly circuit sessions, as well any weights/cardio sessions you’ll be doing as part of your training, a Lancaster University Sports Gym membership is required. The full information can be found here, but the relevant information is summarised below.
The basic membership is Bronze membership, which gives you access to the gym and swimming pool at off-peak times only (7:00am – 12:00 noon and 2:00pm – 4:00pm on the weekdays, and all day on weekends). This is the minimum membership that is required for all members of sports clubs.
One of the benefits of being in a sports club is that we get a discount for the bronze membership, since we’re part of a scheme called Sports Lancaster. This means the bronze membership is reduced to £109 per year, instead of £123 per year.
There are also other types of memberships: the Silver membership gives you access to the gym and swimming pool at all opening hours for £248 per year, the Gold membership gives you free access to all the other facilities (climbing wall, tennis/badminton courts, etc.) for £308 per year, and the Platinum membership gives you free access to classes as well for £370 per year. Unfortunately, we don’t get a discount for these memberships.
Most people go for bronze or silver, if you’re unsure then just get the bronze membership because you can upgrade your membership to silver later if you want to but you can’t downgrade it!
To buy a membership, you have to go to the sports centre and buy it at the front desk, since their website doesn’t have an option to buy the Sports Lancaster version of the memberships at this time. If it’s your first time using this gym then you’ll need to complete the online gym induction, in which you just need to watch a video, sign a form, take a small test, then you’re ready to go!
If you think you might struggle to pay, there is the Lancaster Sports Access Fund which you can apply to which can help you pay for the membership. Also, to reduce upfront costs, you can pay any of the memberships in two instalments, but doing it this way doesn’t include the 3 months of summer.
British Rowing Membership
If you decide you want to take part in affiliated races (the majority of the ones we enter), then a British Rowing membership is required for insurance reasons. Currently, for students this costs £39 for the whole year, and can be purchased here.
